We are offering a workshop for adolescent and high school aged females. It will focus on the following areas:
Self-Esteem
We live in a culture that promotes perfectionism. Young women are exposed to endless messages about how they “should” look, how they “should” dress, and how they “should” act in order to be accepted by their peers. We would like to help young women find their inner strength and learn to develop a more realistic and healthy approach to their self worth.
Body Image
As growth and development occur, the relationship a young woman has with her body can be complex. We would like to foster a healthy and positive relationship with one’s body with the goal of self-acceptance in mind.
Friendship/Peer Relations
The social world of young women is sophisticated. As they progress through school, friends are certainly an important influence on their emotional well-being. Additionally, as a result of challenges presented by today’s technology and media, the traditional concept of a relationship is changing. The interpersonal format of our seminar provides an encouraging environment where young women can talk and explore their shared experiences.
Bullying
There are clear gender differences in the way that youth “bully” one another. Young women experience bullying in the form of relational aggression, purposeful exclusion from social gatherings, gossiping, or rumor spreading. We can help young women stand up to and overcome these difficult situations.
Family Issues
Equally important as the peer social group, a young woman’s family can serve as a foundation for emotional well-being. Family issues can be diverse. Discussions will address both separation and independence from one’s family as well as connectedness to the family.
Romantic Relationships
Maintaining healthy relationships is central to the development of a young woman’s happiness and self-esteem. We will help young women understand the dynamics of dating, learn how to choose a healthy partner, and recognize when they are not in a safe relationship.
Drugs and Alcohol
Adolescents and highschool-aged young women often encounter drugs and alcohol in social settings. This workshop will provide education about the use and misuse of substances and about the potential consequences that can occur.
Academics and Time Management
One of the key components to making a successful transition into higher education is a commitment to academics and time management. When time is managed ineffectively, problems such as stress, anxiety, declining grades, and social withdrawal can develop.
Transition to High School
Anticipating and identifying what this transition will entail can help students prepare and feel confident. Some issues that arise include homesickness, making new friends, dietary changes, finances, and academics.
The preceding areas of focus are suggested topics for the workshop. Additionally, each workshop will be adapted to meet the specific needs of the group members.
