Students and families often face adversity when adjusting to college life as it is a difficult transition period for both themselves and their parents. This workshop addresses issues that affect a female student's adjustment to college life, and it explores the personal growth that results from these changes. It is appropriate for female college students of all ages since each new school year and each transition back and forth to college can sometimes be disruptive and present difficult readjustments. Students will learn new skills and strategies that will enable effective decision-making and positive adjustment to their changing environments and responsibilities. The group will focus on the following areas:
Self-Esteem
We live in a culture that promotes perfectionism. Young women are exposed to endless messages about how they “should” look, how they “should” dress, and how they “should” act to be accepted by their peers. We would like to help young women find their inner strength and learn to develop a more realistic and healthy approach to their self worth.
Body Image
As they grow and develop, the relationship between young women and their body can be complex. We would like to foster a healthy and positive relationship with one’s body with the goal of self acceptance in mind.
Friendship/Peer Relations
The social world of young women is sophisticated. As women progress through college, friends become an important influence on their emotional well-being. Additionally, because of challenges presented by today’s technology and media, the traditional concept of a relationship is changing. The interpersonal format of our seminar provides an encouraging environment where young women can talk and explore their shared experiences.
Family Issues
Equally important as the peer social group, a young woman’s family can serve as a foundation for emotional well-being. Family issues can be diverse. Discussions will address both connectedness to one’s family as well as separation and independence from one’s family.
Romantic Relationships
Maintaining healthy relationships is central to the development of a young woman’s happiness and self-esteem. We will help them understand the dynamics of dating, learn how to choose a healthy partner, and recognize when they are not in a safe relationship.
Drugs and Alcohol
College students often encounter drugs and alcohol in a variety of social settings. This workshop will provide education about the use and misuse of substances and the potential consequences that can occur.
Academics and Time Management
One of the key elements to making a successful transition into higher education is a commitment to academics and time management. When time is managed ineffectively, problems such as stress, anxiety, declining grades, and social withdrawal may occur.
Transition to College
Anticipating and identifying what this transition will entail can help students prepare and feel confident. Some issues that arise include homesickness, making new friends, dietary changes, finances, and academics.
The preceding areas of focus are suggested topics for the workshop. Additionally, each workshop will be adapted to meet the specific needs of the group members.
