Led by psychotherapist Susan McConnell, M.A., this support group is designed to help children understand and cope with the separation or divorce of their parents. Children of divorced parents can experience confusion around the changing family structure, often feeling guilty, isolated, ashamed, and anxious. They may exhibit oppositional and abnormal behaviors at home or with peers and be unmotivated and unable to concentrate on schoolwork or jobs. For children experiencing these kinds of problems, it can be helpful to express their emotions and unique concerns in a supportive peer network where they can exchange ideas and feelings. Our support group provides a confidential and safe setting for this expression, helping children realize that they are not alone and that others have similar experiences and reactions to the changes accompanying separation or divorce. The group will explore ways to reestablish balance and happiness, and it will help children develop new coping skills and strategies for making this difficult adjustment. Your child will learn how to take charge of his or her life, minimize negative thoughts and feelings, and confront fears and anxiety. The group empowers children, giving them the ability to identify helpful resources and reassuring them that there can be love and warmth in the face of a family crisis. | |
