Susan McConnell, M.A., is a psychotherapist who specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced depression, anxiety, and relationship and family adjustments. In addition, Susan provides individual and group counseling for people who are coping with weight management issues like obesity and overeating. Her approach focuses on behavioral treatment for weight management, helping people to modify eating, activity, and thinking habits that contribute to weight problems. Susan's approach to weight management recognizes that overeating is often a response to anxiety, stress, depression, or boredom, in addition to hunger.
Susan received her B.A in Psychology at Lafayette College and her master's degree in developmental psychology from Columbia University. While at Columbia, she interned at the undergraduate counseling center where she counseled students who were coping with depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Susan's clinical experience includes work in the department of neuropsychology at NYU Medical Center, inpatient psychiatric work at Princeton Medical Center, and family work at the Joseph J. Peter's Institute in Philadelphia. Susan has been working in at Bloomingdale Psychological Services for the past 5 years. Her practice includes facilitating support groups for children of divorce, for children with ADHD, and for people with weight management issues. Additionally, she works with children on the autism spectrum and provides both cognitive and diagnostic assessments for children with autism and other developmental disabilities.
Ms. McConnell’s treatment philosophy consists of a cognitive behavioral approach that explores underlying personality, family history, and life experiences that contribute to choices and circumstances. This also involves a behavioral-oriented approach to treatment in which weekly goals are identified in order to change underlying behaviors and the emotional responses associated with them.
