At Bloomingdale Psychological Services, we see psychotherapy as a three-step process. The first step is developing insight and awareness into your concerns, fears, stresses, and circumstances. The second step is gaining an understanding of how your behavior or thinking can be changed to let you feel happier and more harmonious with yourself and your environment. The third step is taking actions to correct the situations or circumstances that are causing distress. These three steps don't always happen in chronological order, but interplay with each other throughout therapy.
Therapy is a process that can be short-term or long-term. Problematic environmental or genetic issues, or difficult life changes such as divorce or illness often require a longer course of treatment. Making significant changes in personality or behavior patterns also usually requires longer-term treatment because it involves undoing habits that developed over many years. After you meet with us for an initial evaluation, we will discuss the most appropriate treatment length for your particular situation. Generally, sessions occur weekly, but more frequently during times of crisis.
At Bloomingdale Psychological Services, we believe that the relationship between the therapist and client should be one of compassion, respect, and understanding. Therapy isn’t always easy or comfortable, but honest and healthy interpersonal communication is essential. At times, irrational or destructive thinking is challenged, and new behaviors are encouraged, and sometimes small assignments are given for you to do outside of our sessions to practice new skills learned in the office. The process of therapy can be difficult, but with hard work and commitment, rewards will follow. Our goal is to provide you with a supportive environment for exploring and understanding how you can experience more happiness and contentment in your life.
